The magnetic Goodman moving fluidly between the real and the unreal

The Georgia Straight

Somewhere between Blade Runner and Miley Cyrus, between femme fatale and cyborg: Vanessa Goodman stands alone – but by no means lost – on the empty stage. Cold, dissecting light delimits her frame, the CONTAINER, in which she moves in an extremely precise and almost hypnotic way. In her impressive solo CONTAINER, the Canadian choreographer plays with the presentation of the female body and simultaneously with its destruction, challenging gender and identity attributions. With her expressive movements and enormous stage presence, Goodman creates a tension that can hardly be evaded. Located somewhere between reality and dream, rough club dancefloor, withdrawn concentration and distant spheres, the Canadian choreographer and dancer succeeds in presenting a subversive and unsettling evening.

VANESSA GOODMAN received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada. The artistic director and choreographer of the company Action at a Distance Dance Society is interested in art that goes beyond taking a purely aesthetic approach. With the means of dance, she explores the essence and nature of being human. Goodman has received several awards, including the Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award in 2013 and the Chrystal Dance Prize in 2019. In 2019 she also received grants from the Marshall M. Williams and Schultz Endowments of the Banff Centre. Goodmann lives in Vancouver.
