Stunning spectacle that combined sweaty, ritualistic and ecstatic dance; propulsive music; and incantatory narration.

The New York Times

KIRINA is the name of a battle of the Mandinka people in the 12th century possessing great importance for West Africa. The hero Suniata defeated a tyrant and established a better rule. In his eponymous piece, the West African choreographer Serge Aimé Coulibaly transfers this epos to the present. With his energetic ensemble of nine dancers, four musicians, two singers, one narrator, and 30 extras from Bremen, he presents his vision of a self-determined Africa in opulent pictures. With powerful choreographed scenes, heaps of blood-red and black clothes and an excellent ensemble, Coulibaly emphatically tells of homeland, flight and migration.

In his choreographies, SERGE AIMÉ COULIBALY, who belongs to West Africa’s most significant voices in dance, combines traditional African movement languages with forms of contemporary dance. Born in Burkina Faso in 1972, he was trained at the FEEREN Company in Burkina Faso and the Centre Chorégraphique National de Nantes. As a dancer, he worked with Sidi Labi Cherkaoui and Alain Platel, among others. In 2002 he founded FASO DANSE THÉÂTRE.

The singer, songwriter and guitarist ROKIA TRAORÉ, born in Mali, has released numerous albums since 1998 and has been awarded with various prizes (including Songlines Music Awards, World Music Award of the BBC). She is a member of the Bambara Ethnic Group. Traoré calls her music, which combines various traditions of her homeland, contemporary music from Mali. Her lyrics often focus on social and societal issues, e.g. the status of women in Africa’s modern societies.
